Why Stop Smoking?
Quitting smoking can dramatically improve your health. Staying smokefree for just one year can decrease your risk of a heart attack by as much as 50 percent. After ten years, your risk of lung cancer will fall to around half that of someone who continues to smoke. Cutting down on cigarettes is also a good goal, but it doesn't bring such dramatic health benefits as kicking the habit completely.
Why is It So Hard to Quit Smoking?
The nicotine in cigarettes is as addictive as heroin. When you smoke, the brain develops extra nicotine receptors, which means that when you try to quit, you will develop symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. These can include anxiety, irritability, and strong cravings for nicotine. These symptoms should subside after around two to four weeks, but getting through the initial period of smoking cessation can be tough.
